Plant biomass absorbs CO2 in the air during growth. Through both rotting or burning, fixed carbon is again released almost completely as CO2. Due to its ability to effectively retain soil nutrients, biochar can then exercise its strengths as a soil ameliorant and highly efficient water storage.
